Criminal Justice
Issues such as over-incarceration, inadequate access to legal representation, and harsh sentencing have prompted discussions about reforming the criminal justice system. The United States incarcerates more people per capita than any other country. One in three Americans has a criminal record. The problem is particularly acute among young Black men in Los Angeles, where the police and the courts have a demonstrative record of disparate treatment of racial minorities in arrests and sentencing. Further, since the pandemic, the number of prosecutors, public defenders, court reporters, and interpreters have decreased, slowing the wheels of justice to a halt and ensuring longer pretrial detentions for many. Ongoing efforts by civil rights groups and activists, including Social Justice LA, are instrumental in drawing attention to these issues and in implementing reforms that enhance fairness, transparency, and community engagement.
